The Audi R8 V8 is widely regarded as a modern day classic and a design which will go down in history as one of the great mid engine super cars.
The modern car company Audi evolved from Auto Union who had an established heritage in auto sports and highly engineered sports cars. The company did little in the way of supercars until it’s purchase in 1966 by the Volkswagen group and in 1980 they decided to make a game changer, the Audi Quattro rally car. This moment of genius changed the public perception of Audi overnight into a modern, exciting brand. On the back of that success they developed a string of amazing Touring Cars and in the late 1990’s saw them turn their attention to Le Mans. Alongside this focus toward being leaders in the world of motor racing, they launched the Audi TT, a stunning piece of design showing the world they were able to speak to a new design literate generation and offer the complete package of ‘wow’ looks and ‘wow’ engineering.
The Audi r8 V8
This period of accelerated research and development ultimately led to Audi R8 Race Car and then to the masterpiece R8 super car we see today.
First to come to light was the mouthwatering mixture of Le Mans racing knowledge, Quattro engineering and revolutionary space frame in the form of the Audi Le Mans Quattro concept car launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003. The designers introduced a number of amazing new features and demonstrated how the contemporary design of the TT could be evolved into a modern high performance super car. The chassis of the new car was the same light weight aluminum frame used in the Lamborghini Gallardo and combined with the latest generation of 4 wheel drive technology from the Quattro, this heady recipe quickly got the critics and customers buzzing, persuading Audi to explore the full production of an Audi super car.
Inside the R8
The R8 launched in 2006 at the Paris Motor Show amidst much fanfare and expectation. The customers were not to be disappointed with all the great featured offered by the Audi Le Mans Quattro concept car following through to the full production R8 models. The car offered the amazing 4.2 litre V8 engine seen in the Lamborghini Gallardo providing a breathtaking 420 bhp able to catapult the R8 from 0 to 60 in 4.3 seconds and then onto a top speed of 187 mph. As well as the performance and the looks, the R8 also offered great handling at low and high speed enabling the car to quickly establish itself as the example of a modern super car for the modern age.
